Ube Cheese Bread Pie
Ube Cheese Bread Pie will make a great snack. It is sweet, salty and crunchy.
The combination of ube and cheese has been one of my favorite combos. There are so many baked and non-baked treats that use ube and cheese as filling. Although I love the combo, I don’t think I made a bread or other baked treats using both as filling.
These Filipino cheese cupcakes have ube and cheese in them, and they’re amazing. I told you… I love ube and cheese together.
WHAT IS UBE JAM?
Ube jam is made with sweet purple yam called Ube, and other ingredients like coconut milk, condensed milk, evaporated milk, butter, sugar, and ube extract. It is used as a filling for baked and non-baked goodies. It can also be used as a topping for a dessert, or can be eaten as is.
Back to the Ube Cheese Bread Pie…
I bought bottles of ube jam last month. For me they are too sweet and so little on ube flavor so I had to do the usual “makeover” (AKA: making it better for my tastebuds). I kept it in the fridge and all I have to do is just wait for ube ideas to pop up.
Last week, suddenly, the idea of Ube Cheese Bread Pie just popped up. Right after work the next day, I proceeded to the kitchen and did my thing.
The Ube Cheese Bread Pie uses coated flattened white bread as the crust instead of the usual pie crust. It is the closest thing you can have if you are too lazy to make a crust.
The pie came out amazing! As expected, the crust is super crunchy. The filling is sweet, salty, and delicious. You can’t stop at one pie only, that’s for sure. This pie is as delicious as this Mango Bread Pie.
NOTES:
- I used 8 slices of bread. You can use as much or less as you want. For every slice of bread, you will need about 1 tbsp of ube jam and a slice of cheese.
- If the ube jam is thick and hard to spread, you can microwave it for a few seconds to make it spreadable.
- I used the panko-style breadcrumbs because it gives crunchier results than using the regular (very fine) breadcrumbs.
- The bread pies are best if eaten immediately. However, if you have leftovers, you can reheat them in an oven at 350 F for 5-10 minutes. Or you can use an oven toaster.

Ube Cheese Bread Pie
Fried pocket hand pie that uses bread as the crust. It is also crunchy because the of the panko-style breadcrumbs coating. It is filled with ube and cheese – sweet, salty, cheesy, and crunchy in every bite.
Ingredients
- 8 slices of bread brown part (edges) removed
- 8 tbsp of ube jam
- 8 slices of cheddar cheese I used Eden
- 1 egg beaten
- 1 cup panko-style breadcrumbs
- Cooking oil
Instructions
-
Prepare a pan over medium heat, and then add oil (about an inch deep). While waiting for the oil to be hot, we can prepare our bread pie.
-
Cut the sides (brown part) of the bread. (The brown part of the bread can be used as breadcrumbs after they have dried out – don’t throw them.) Now, you’ll have the white part only – flatten this using a rolling pin or a bottle.
-
Place about 1 tbsp of ube jam, then cheese on top.
-
Brush the sides (only half side) of the bread with beaten egg to serve as a “glue”. Fold the other half, press and seal using a fork.
-
Coat the filled pie with beaten egg and then with breadcrumbs. Set aside on a plate.
-
When the oil is hot, fry the bread pie until all sides are golden brown. Transfer the fried pies on a plate with a stack of paper towels to drain excess oil.
-
Enjoy immediately.

I love anything with melty cheese and the combination with sweet and crunchy is a winner. Delicious and I am sure very more-ish. I know I have to look for that jam.

I hope you can find it and make some treats with ube. I think you’ll love it.
