Naporitan (Japanese Ketchup Spaghetti)

Rurouni Kenshin was one of my favorite animes. I was thrilled when I watched the live-action movie. I love how Takeru Satoh portrayed his role in the film collection Rurouni Kenshin. I only saw him in these films and I was used to seeing his long hair and not-so-smiling face.😅

On another note, I am not a fan of romantic drama films or series unless I love the celebrity/celebrities involved.

When I saw the trailer for the Japanese TV series on Netflix, First Love, and saw Takeru Satoh, I wanted to see it. Yes, I’m not a fan of love stories, but I want to see the “other side” of his acting.

I thought I’d only see a few episodes, but guess what? I instantly loved the first episode and cried my heart out on the last episode.

Anyway, Harumichi Namiki’s (Satoh’s character) favorite food is Naporitan (or Napolitan). It is a Japanese spaghetti dish made of sausage (or hotdog), a few veggies, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce (or soy sauce), and pasta water. Some add tomato paste and brown mushrooms. It is topped with Tabasco sauce and parmesan cheese.

I was hesitant to try it, but it turned out delicious, and I loved it.🤤 The mixture of ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, and tomato paste gives an umami flavor. The added Tabasco sauce balances the taste of the sauce and adds some kick to the dish. The parmesan cheese completes the pasta dish.

The Japanese version of this dish uses Japanese sausage. However, I was not able to find it, and also, Japanese sausage is made of pork which I don’t eat. I used the chicken hotdog that was in the freezer.

The dish is easy to make and doesn’t take a lot of time. 30 minutes or less, and it’s ready!

NOTES ON NAPORITAN:

  • If you can find Japanese sausage and ketchup, use them.
  • Taste the sauce before adding the pasta.
  • You may need to add salt.

NAPORITAN (Japanese Ketchup Spaghetti)

A tomato ketchup-based spaghetti dish – sweet & savoury.

Ingredients

  • 100 g dry pasta cooked according to package instructions
  • 2 tbsp cooking oil
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 3/4 cup sliced onion
  • 1/2 cup sliced green bell pepper
  • 2 hotdogs sliced
  • 6-8 tbsp tomato ketchup
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 4-6 tbsp pasta water
  • 1-2 tsp Worcestershire sauce or soy sauce
  • Parmesan cheese
  • Tabasco sauce or hot sauce

Instructions

  1. Cook pasta according to package instructions.
  2. In a pan over medium heat, add oil and butter.
  3. When the butter is melted, add sliced hotdogs. Cook for 3-5 minutes, then remove from the pan and set aside.
  4. Using the same pan, add onion and bell pepper slices. Cook until soft.
  5. Add tomato paste, tomato ketchup, Worcestershire sauce (or soy sauce), and pasta water. Do a taste test, then add the cooked pasta.
  6. Mix until pasta is well-coated with the sauce.
  7. You can do a taste test once again and adjust the taste.
  8. Serve and top with Parmesan cheese and drizzle some Tabasco sauce.
