Dark Chocolate Orange Cookies

Hey cookie lovers! We are making Dark Chocolate Orange Cookies today. 🥳

If you haven’t tried this combo yet, now is a great time to start. I’m totally obsessed with the chocolate and orange mix—it brings back fond memories of my late mom. I remember she used to bring me a pack of chocolates infused with orange when I was a kid, and that combination has been my favorite ever since.

So, let’s talk about these irresistible cookies…

The rich, deep flavor of dark chocolate pairs beautifully with the bright, citrusy notes of orange. It’s like a match made in dessert heaven! The texture of these cookies is similar to brownies—they’re soft, fudgy, and incredibly chocolatey, with a hint of orange zest.

But wait, there’s a secret ingredient! Adding Terry’s Chocolate Orange on top of each cookie after baking is optional but highly recommended for elevating these treats to a whole new level of yum. Picture those irresistible chocolate orange slices melting slightly on the warm cookies.

So, whether you’re baking these for a special occasion or just to treat yourself, these Dark Chocolate Orange Cookies are sure to impress. I hope you give this recipe a try and enjoy the delicious results as much as I do.

NOTES ON DARK CHOCOLATE ORANGE COOKIES:

  • Make sure to cool the butter before using it.
  • The dough may not look exactly like a mix between brownie batter and cookie dough, but trust me on this. Just follow the next note. 😉
  • It is highly recommended to keep the shaped dough in the fridge before baking to firm it up.
  • If you’re not using Terry’s chocolate orange, you may want to add orange extract to your cookie batter.

Ingredients

  • 2 tsp orange zest
  • ½ cup (83 g) packed brown sugar
  • ¼ cup (60 ml) melted unsalted butter (see notes)
  • 1 medium egg (at room temperature)
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ cup + 2 tbsp (84 g) all-purpose flour
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ¼ cup (23 g) dark cocoa powder
  • Dark chocolate chips/chocolate buttons/chopped chocolate
  • Terry’s chocolate orange

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine the orange zest with the brown sugar using your fingertips, rubbing them together until the mixture becomes fragrant.
  2. Add the melted (and cooled) butter, egg, and vanilla extract. Mix until well combined.
  3. Incorporate the dry ingredients—flour, salt, baking soda, and dark cocoa powder—into the mixture and stir until combined.
  4. Fold in the chocolate buttons (or your choice of chocolate).
  5. Using a standard ice cream scoop, place dollops of dough onto a lined baking sheet. Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes to 1 hour.

  6. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 350 F.
  7. Bake the cookies in the preheated oven for 10-15 minutes, or until the edges are crispy and the center is still soft. Rotate the baking sheet halfway through the baking time.

  8. As soon as the cookies are done, place a slice of Terry’s chocolate orange on top of each cookie while they are still warm.
