Chocolate Oats Drink

I enjoyed the hot chocolate mix I made before, so I was inspired to make similar to it. What’s lovelier than to make something I enjoyed growing up like this Chocolate Oats Drink?

Well, it’s not really called Chocolate Oats Drink, commercially. It was in a sachet and the only thing I needed to add was hot water. This breakfast oat drink is something that reminds me of my late Mom. She used to buy a dozen for us (me and the siblings) to have for our breakfast when we are running late for school. As a child, I didn’t notice if there was something missing with the taste or not. All I can remember is I enjoyed every sip.

As I grow older, my tastebuds changed – always looking for more delicious stuff. If I can do something to “improve” the taste of something “instant”, I would. I do this if I am not happy with the taste of the “instant” food or drink.

WHAT IS CHOCOLATE OATS DRINK?

Chocolate Oats Drink is basically a dry mixture of Milo, milk powder, cocoa powder, sugar and instant oats. It is then mixed with hot water, and usually enjoyed during breakfast. Since I used instant oats, there is no need to cook it. Few minutes after adding hot water to the chocolate oats mixture, it is ready to be enjoyed.

I make this mixture once a week and I have already refilled the one liter mason jar for the fifth time. I take some of the mixture with me at work and enjoy it during lunch time if don’t bring something to eat. It is filling and very comforting. Every sip brings back memories when my Mom was standing in front of the water kettle, ready to prepare this drink for me.

But wait… before you ask, “Jhuls, why do you bother making your own when you can buy it? And it’s more convenient.”. Well, because I know what’s in the homemade one. And I can adjust it according to my liking or add whatever I want like grated chocolate or chia seeds.

This came out really good, just the way I love it. One of the good things here – you can adjust the measurements of the ingredients as per your liking. I did few adjustments myself until I reached this one.

  • ¼ cup + 1 tbsp (32 g) powdered milk
  • 1 ¼ cup (155 g) Milo
  • ¼ cup (24 g) cocoa powder
  • 1 ½ cup (125 g) instant oats
  • Hot water to serve

Instructions

  1. Place the ingredients (except for the hot water) in a bowl. Mix very well.
  2. Transfer to a jar, give it a good shake. Keep until ready to use.
  3. To serve: Fill your cup up to ⅓; add hot water (about 200 ml). Mix and wait for 5 minutes before enjoying.

Recipe Notes

  • You can add grated chocolate and chia seeds in the dry mixture. I may add it next time.
  • This makes 8-10 servings, depending on the amount of chocolate oats mixture you’d use.
  • Hot fresh milk can be used instead of hot water. I might try non-dairy milk next time.
  • If you don’t have Milo, you can use any brand of chocolate flavor malted powder.
