The mango season is here and I can’t let the season pass without making this Mango Bread Pie.
If you know me well, then you know that I am a huge mango lover and I love anything with mangoes. It may be a mango smoothie, mango jam, mango juice, mango ice cream or Peach Mango Pie.
Peach Mango Pie is a pie made by the famous fast-food chain in the Philippines called Jollibee. I cannot remember when did they add this delicious pie to their menu but it has been my favorite ever since. Peach Mango Pie is a fried pocket hand pie with a flaky crust and sweet peach and mango filling.
I’ve been craving for Peach Mango Pie but with the almost failed pie crust I made before, I didn’t want to try again… not now. But it doesn’t mean I cannot enjoy a good mango pie.
I’ve been seeing Tuna Bread Pie lately and I thought of making a mango bread pie… and I did.
Mango Bread Pie is a pocket hand pie that’s been fried. Instead of using pie crust, I used bread and with sweet mango filling. It is also crunchy because of the breadcrumbs coating.
Honestly speaking, I loved it. I think this is the closest thing you can have when you are craving for Peach Mango Pie but you are far away from the fast-food chain or you are too lazy to make the pie crust yourself. Also, this is a good way to use white bread and cheaper than using a pie crust.
I’ve shared a video on my YouTube channel – I hope you’ll check it out. 😉
I am taking these to this week’s Fiesta Friday #334. Thank you, Angie and Mollie for hosting!
Mango Bread Pie
Ingredients
Mango filling:
- 1 cup chopped ripe and firm mangoes
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 3 tbsp white sugar
- 2 tbsp cornstarch
- Pinch of cinnamon
- Pinch of salt
Others:
- 8-10 slices white bread
- 1 cup breadcrumbs
- 2 eggs beaten
- cooking oil for frying
Instructions
For the mango filling:
-
Place all the ingredients for the mango filling in a heatproof bowl. Mix everything and microwave for 1-2 minutes until it resembles a paste. Let it cool before using as a filling.
Others:
-
Cut the sides (brown part) of the bread. (The brown part of the bread can be used as breadcrumbs after they have dried out – don’t throw them.) Now, you’ll have the white part only – flatten this using a rolling pin or a bottle.
-
Place about 1 tbsp of the mango pie filing on top of the flattened white bread.
-
Brush the sides (only half side) of the bread with beaten egg to serve as a “glue”. Fold the other half, press and seal using a fork.
-
Coat the filled mango bread pie with beaten egg and then with breadcrumbs. Set aside on a plate.
-
In a pan over medium heat, add oil. When the oil is hot, fry the mango bread pie until all sides are golden brown. Transfer the fried mango bread pies on a plate with a stack of paper towels to drain excess oil.
-
Enjoy immediately.
