Tricky Tuesday #4: Healthy-Baking-Substitutions
July 1, 2014
Hmm, I never knew you could sub butter with bananas. 😀
For all the health conscious out there, you could try these subs and let me know. 😉 Um, maybe I would try some of these some other time.
I hope everyone is having a pleasant day! <3

It’s my pleasure. Thanks for stopping by. 🙂

I’ve tried a few of these and they really work. Thanks for all the great ideas. I hadn’t tried subbing banana for the butter either. Greek yogurt for oil looks like another great one to try!
Jhuls
I don’t think I am ready to sub my butter with bananas. 😀 Thanks for stopping by.
vibhagupta
Wonderful substitutes. Loveto try them all. Lol.
Jhuls
Thank you, Vibha! Once you try some of these, please do let me know your thoughts. 🙂

Definitely Jhuls.

I haven’t tried avocado in baked goods, but I have made a raw chocolate avocado pie – it was delicious! I also used dates and raw honey to sweeten it, rather than sugar.
As for the beans to replace flour… interesting… I’ve thrown a heap of buckwheat groats into my food processor and used the result as flour, so perhaps the same would work for black beans!
Jhuls
I have never tried using healthy substitutions. But having read so many successful stories, I might give some of these (if not all) a try. Thank you for stopping by, Briana. 🙂

I have tried the black bean thing in brownies and they didn’t turn out well at all! Though I have heard of people having amazing black bean brownies so maybe I did something else wrong. I have made cookies with chickpeas instead of flour and they worked beautifully! I also often sub sugar for apple sauce or maple syrup and that works a treat! I can’t imagine subbing sugar for vanilla extract would work, I would be interested to hear if someone has tried that. Great post!!
Jhuls
Sounds interesting! What did you do with the chick peas? I mean, did you put them in the food processor? Thank you for the additional info, btw. Have a wonderful day. 🙂
frankiesfeast
Yep the whole recipe was done in the food processor. I’m pretty sure this was the recipe: http://www.texanerin.com/2012/04/grain-free-peanut-butter-chocolate-chip-cookie-dough-bites.html 🙂
Jhuls
Wow! I checked it out and it sounds really interesting. Thanks for sharing. I might give some of these substitutions a try. I hope you have a wonderful mid-week. <3

Great ideas! I’m trying to cut down on dairy so avocado and banana instead of butter is very interesting. Maybe I will try it. Thanks!
Jhuls
Will you let me know if you do? 🙂 Thanks and have a wonderful day.

It’s just SO hard for me to substitute some of that stuff. Doesn’t seem like it would taste the same.
Jhuls
I feel the same. 😀 But maybe I would try some of them. 🙂
Pang
This is mind blowing info, Jhuls!!!!!! Thank you SO MUCH.
Finally, I can ‘play’ with the right substitute. Love it 🙂
Jhuls
I would love to hear your thoughts, Pang! Thank you for stopping by. 🙂 I think I missed so much happenings on your blogs; I will do my best to catch up soon.
Pang
Don’t even worry about that, Jhuls 🙂
But, that is just so sweet of you, which I am so fond of.

Apple sauce and yoghurt, can be great substitutes. I have seen recipes for black bean chocolate brownies, I am pretty inventive and brave but haven’t yet been able to convince myself to try baking them. I have tried cacao nibs however, and I am not a fan… Ha… 🙂
Jhuls
Hmm, I can see that not everyone would be pleased with the healthy substitutions. Maybe I am one of those. 😀
Ahila
Nice list… I also substitute ground flax seeds for eggs as well as substitute partially flour with oats in my baking.
Jhuls
I have tried oats and it worked well. Thank you so much for being here. 🙂
Baby June
Great find! I like using some of these substitutions, especially the ones that make things vegan. 🙂
Jhuls

No? Well, I wanted to try the banana 🙂
But I wouldn’t try everything :p
Jhuls
Banana to replace my butter? I would think about that. 😛
sarahgiebens
It sounds interesting :p

This is just what I needed! I was just wondering the other day how to sub and use healthier alternatives. Problem is knowing how much to use when substituting. Thanks for sharing!!
Jhuls
I am asking myself the same, Arl. We could experiment and let each other know. 😉
apsara
hmm, I would like to know why evaporated (condensed) milk is better than heavy cream. Doesn’t it have added sugar?
Jhuls
Honestly, I don’t have any idea, Aspara. 🙁 Just saw this somewhere and I thought somebody might be interested. 🙂
apsara
this sure has made me curious now. I will try to find out. thanks for sharing, 🙂
Jhuls
Will you please let me know your thoughts once you try some of these? 😀 Thanks a lot for stopping by.
eatpraybake
Thanks for sharing! I love knowing about substitutes 🙂 I would love to try using avocado instead of oil.
Aspara- comparing the nutrition facts of evaporated milk to heavy cream, the evaporated milk has less than 50% of total fat and cholesterol. I used nutritiondata.self.com to find the nutrition info. Evaporated milk is usually sweetened, so I’m sure it would help to reduce the amount of sugar added to a recipe. 🙂
Jhuls
Yay! Thank you so much for searching and providing this info. I’d love to know your thoughts. Thanks for stopping by. 🙂

I was just searching for a lot of substitute options,to bake without butter, just so lucky to find this. Thank you very much 🙂
Jhuls
It’s my pleasure. I wonder how bananas would do what butter can do. Would you let me know when you try this?? 😀
Malar
Definitely Jhuls, Will let you know soon 🙂
Malar

I like this! I always feel a little bad when I bake a cake and see all the butter and sugar but I know that it what makes it so yummy! I will try some of these and see what happens 🙂
Jhuls
Thank you, Petra. Would you let me know?? 🙂
petra08
I will for sure! I don’t bake very often so I might need some patience 🙂 I like the exchange of butter and avocado and wonder if it will change the taste very much!
Jhuls
That’s the top reason why I don’t like to try replacing my butter. 😀
