Did you notice that I’ve been posting recipes using canned goods lately? It is because, during these days that we can’t go out easily like before (because of quarantine, lockdown or whatever you call it), we (mostly Filipinos) can rely on canned goods in situations like this. This time, I am going to share a recipe that uses canned tuna – Fried Canned Tuna Balls.
Canned tuna is one of my favorite things to buy when doing the grocery. You can do so much with canned tuna – cook it with pasta, make it as a sandwich spread or a salad, tuna patties, tuna balls or even eat them as is.
These fried canned tuna balls are very easy to make and you might have most of the ingredients on hand. One of my favorite ingredients here is the mayonnaise. I just love canned tuna with mayo. Canned tuna with mayo and kernel corn specifically- they are perfect together in my opinion.
However, in this recipe, I didn’t add anything for texture. I was afraid that if I add something like chopped carrots or corn kernel, they might pop out during the frying period. Although, I would try adding one or both of them. I could imagine. Hmmm, yummy!
I’ve shared a video on my YouTube channel. Please don’t forget to like, share, and subscribe. See you there! 😉
I am taking these with me at Angie’s Fiesta Friday #324. Thank you to our co-hosts this week, Diann @ Of Goats and Greens and Liz @ Spades, Spatulas & Spoons.
Fried Canned Tuna Balls
Ingredients
For tuna mixture:
- 2 cans (170 g each) tuna in water, drained
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 2-3 tbsp breadcrumbs see instruction #1
- 1/8 tsp salt
- 1/8 tsp ground black pepper
- zest of 1/2 lemon
- 1 tbsp chopped fresh parsley
- 2 tbsp mayo
- 3/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 beaten egg
For coating #1:
- More bread crumbs for coating
For coating #2 & frying:
- 1 beaten egg
- 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
- Cooking oil
Instructions
-
In a bowl, add all the ingredients for the tuna mixture. For the breadcrumbs, start with 2 tbsp, then mix everything until combined. Try shaping the mixture into a ball. If not firm enough for you, add another tbsp of breadcrumbs.
-
For coating #1: Prepare about 1/3 cup of breadcrumbs in another bowl.
-
Take about 2 tbsp of the tuna mixture and shape them into a ball. Coat with breadcrumbs and transfer to a plate. Cover this and keep in the fridge until chilled and firmer.
-
For coating #2: Take out the chilled tuna balls from the fridge. Prepare two bowls – add 1/3 cup of breadcrumbs to one bowl, then 1 beaten egg to the other bowl. Dip each tuna balls in the beaten egg then coat with breadcrumbs. Place the coated tuna balls in a plate.
-
To fry: In a pan over medium heat, add oil 2 inches from the bottom. When the oil is hot enough (about 375 F), drop tuna balls. Make sure you don’t overcrowd the pan. Fry the tuna balls for 3-5 minutes or until golden brown. Place the fried tuna balls on a stack of paper towels or on a strainer to drain excess oil.
